2014 U.S. Atlantic (Second & Sixth Fleets) U.S. Pacific Fleet (Third and Seventh Fleets) and the US Naval Forces Central Command and 5th Fleet Aircraft Carrier Deployments with east coast carriers participating in Maritime Security Operations (MSO). Operation Freedom's Sentinel “to help secure and build upon the hard-fought gains of the past," succeeding Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), the "military response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, commencing on 7 October 2001, in continuation of the Global War on Terrorism. Operation Freedom's Sentinel is part of the NATO-led Resolute Support Mission, which began on January 1, 2015. Operation Enduring Freedom drew to a close on 28 December 2014 after 13 years of combat operations, when President Barack Obama and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel each issued statements marking the end of the combat mission in Afghanistan, in a ceremony at the International Security and Assistance Force headquarters in Kabul, Afghanistan. An American-led intervention in Iraq started on 15 June 2014, when President Barack Obama ordered United States forces to be dispatched to the region, in response to offensives in Iraq conducted by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). On the evening of 7 August 2014, U.S. President Barack Obama gave a live address to the nation. He described the recent ISIL advances across Iraq and said that ISIL's persecution and threatening the extinction of Yazidis, a religious minority in northern Iraq, including especially the Yazidis who had fled into the Sinjar Mountains. ISIL kinetic operations started on August 8, 2014. The U.S. decided in October 2014 to name its military efforts against ISIL as "Operation Inherent Resolve"; the military intervention against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), including both the campaign in Iraq and the campaign in Syria. CVW-3 was embarked on board Harry S. Truman with its associated squadrons - Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 32 "Swordsmen," VFA-37 "Ragin' Bulls," and VFA-105 "Gunslingers;" Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 312 "Checkerboards;" Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 126 "Seahawks;" Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 130 "Zappers;" Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 7 "Dusty Dogs;" and Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 74 "Swamp Foxes." Kevin Sweeney Commander, Carrier Strike Group (CCSG) 10 & staff; 1st Combined Destroyer Squadron staff comprised of U.S. and Royal Navy personnel. CVW-5 is a collection of aircraft designed to perform various functions and exercises. The aircraft are attached to: the “Diamondbacks” of Strike Fight Squadron (VFA) 102 flying the F/A-18F Super Hornet; the “Royal Maces” of VFA-27, the “Eagles” of VFA-115 and the “Dambusters” VFA-195 each flying the F/A-18E Super Hornet; the “Shadowhawks” of Electronic Attack Squadron 141 flying the EA-18G Growler; VAW-115 flying the E-2C Hawkeye; the “Providers” of Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 30, Detachment 5, flying the C-2A Greyhound; the “Golden Falcons” of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 12 flying the MH-60S Seahawk; and the “Saberhawks” of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 77 flying the MH-60R Seahawk.

 

Rear Admiral Mark Montgomery assumed command of Commander, Task Force (CTF) 70, the U.S. Navy's largest battle force in January 2013, from Rear Admiral J. R. Haley, serving from April 2011 to January 2013.

 

Task Force 70 is the Battle Force for U.S. 7th Fleet Commander, Task Force 70 (CTF 70) has operational control of all carrier strike groups and independently deployed cruisers, destroyers and frigates that deploy or transit through the 7th Fleet area of operations.

 

Commanded by Rear Admiral Mark Montgomery, the George Washington is the flagship of George Washington Carrier Strike Group, Task Force 70 and Carrier Strike Group Five (formerly CarGru 5), with more than 5,000 Sailors, with Strike Warfare Commander; staffs of Battle Force 7th Fleet/CSG 5; Carrier Air Wing Five (CVW 5) and its nine squadrons and Destroyer Squadron 15 embarked. CSG 5 includes Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruisers and Destroyer Squadron Fifteen (CDS 15), which serves as the Sea Combat Commander and is responsible for Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruisers and assigned Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers.

 

USS George Washington (CVN-73) and surface combatant ships operate out of Yokosuka, Japan, while CVW 5 operates out of Atsugi, Japan, when not embarked on George Washington Together, these units form the U.S. Navy's only continuously forward deployed (and largest) carrier strike group.

 

The CSG 5 Commander also serves as Battle Force Seventh Fleet and Commander, Task Force (CTF 70) for 7th Fleet. In these responsibilities, CSG 5 serves as the Commander of all surface forces (carrier strike groups, independently deploying cruisers, destroyers and frigates) in the 7th Fleet area of responsibility. CTF 70 also serves as the Theater Surface Warfare Commander (TSUWC) and Theater Integrated Air Missile Defense Commander (TIAMDC) for Seventh Fleet.

 

Carrier Strike Group 5, also known as CSG 5 or CARSTRKGRU 5, is the U.S. Navy carrier strike group assigned to the United States Pacific Fleet and permanently forward deployed to the U.S. 7th Fleet.

 

CSG 5 is responsible for unit-level training, integrated training, and material readiness for the group’s ships and aviation squadrons. As the only continuously forward deployed carrier strike group, the CSG-5 staff does not stand down when the strike group is in Yokosuka, but instead continues to maintain command responsibilities over deploying Carrier Strike Groups and independently deployed cruisers, destroyers, and frigates that operate in the Seventh Fleet operating area. The commander and staff are also responsible for the higher level Task Force 70 duties throughout the year in addition to the CSG-5 duties. The composition of the strike group in immediate proximity of the George Washington varies throughout the year.

 

George Washington CSG includes the embarked staffs of Destroyer Squadron 15/DESRON FIFTEEN.

 

DESRON FIFTEEN is the Navy's only forward-deployed Destroyer Squadron and is responsible for the readiness, tactical and administrative responsibilities for seven Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. The destroyers' squadron commodore serves as the immediate Superior in Command (ISIC) of the ships assigned to the squadron.

 

DESRON FIFTEEN ships are the principal surface forces of Battle Force Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans. In addition to duties as ISIC for the seven ships assigned to the squadron, the DESRON FIFTEEN staff also deploys with the George Washington carrier strike group (CSG). During these deployments, the Commodore serves as Sea Combat Commander (SCC) for the CSG. The SCC responsibilities include Surface Warfare Commander (SWC), Anti-Submarine Warfare employment of attack submarines assigned to the CS.

 

DESRON FIFTEEN has additional assignments in the Seventh Feet as the Maritime Counter - Special Operations Force Commander (MCSOF), Strike Force ASW Commander (SFASWC) and Deputy Ballistic Missile Defense Commander (BMDC).

Commanded by Rear Admiral John Alexander, the George Washington is the flagship of George Washington Carrier Strike Group, Task Force 70 and Carrier Strike Group Five (formerly CarGru 5), with more than 5,000 Sailors, with Strike Warfare Commander; staffs of Battle Force 7th Fleet/CSG 5; Carrier Air Wing Five (CVW 5) and its nine squadrons and Destroyer Squadron 15 embarked. CSG 5 includes Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruisers and Destroyer Squadron Fifteen (CDS 15), which serves as the Sea Combat Commander and is responsible for Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruisers and assigned Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers.

 

USS George Washington (CVN-73) and surface combatant ships operate out of Yokosuka, Japan, while CVW 5 operates out of Atsugi, Japan, when not embarked on George Washington Together, these units form the U.S. Navy's only continuously forward deployed (and largest) carrier strike group.

 

The CSG 5 Commander also serves as Battle Force Seventh Fleet and Commander, Task Force (CTF 70) for 7th Fleet. CSG 5 is responsible for unit-level training, integrated training, and material readiness for the group’s ships and aviation squadrons. As the only continuously forward deployed carrier strike group, the CSG-5 staff does not stand down when the strike group is in Yokosuka, but instead continues to maintain command responsibilities over deploying Carrier Strike Groups and independently deployed cruisers, destroyers, and frigates that operate in the Seventh Fleet operating area. DESRON FIFTEEN is the Navy's only forward-deployed Destroyer Squadron and is responsible for the readiness, tactical and administrative responsibilities for seven Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. The destroyers' squadron commodore serves as the immediate Superior in Command (ISIC) of the ships assigned to the squadron.

Norfolk to San Diego operating with the Fleet Forces Command, 5th, 6th and 7th Fleet AOR - Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR) is the U.S. military operation name for the military intervention against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), including both the campaign in Iraq and the campaign in Syria. Effective 22 Sep 2015, III Corps is responsible for Combined Joint Task Force- Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR), 3rd Maritime Security Operations, and theater security cooperation efforts in the region. TR's deployment will be a world tour, which will end with her completing a homeport shift to San Diego. TR's change in homeport is part of a three carrier shift involving the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) and the USS George Washington (CVN-74).

Theodore Roosevelt is the flagship of the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group, which is composed of Carrier Strike Group 12, Carrier Air Wing 1, Destroyer Squadron 2 staff, the guided-missile cruiser USS Normandy (CG-60) and the guided-missile destroyers USS Winston S. DESRON FIFTEEN is the Navy's only forward-deployed Destroyer Squadron and is responsible for the readiness, tactical and administrative responsibilities for seven Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. The destroyers' squadron commodore serves as the immediate Superior in Command (ISIC) of the ships assigned to the squadron.

 

DESRON FIFTEEN ships are the principal surface forces of Battle Force Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans. In addition to duties as ISIC for the seven ships assigned to the squadron, the DESRON FIFTEEN staff also deploys with the Ronald Reagan carrier strike group (CSG). During these deployments, the Commodore serves as Sea Combat Commander (SCC) for the CSG. The SCC responsibilities include Surface Warfare Commander (SWC), Anti-Submarine Warfare employment of attack submarines assigned to the CS.

 

DESRON FIFTEEN has additional assignments in the Seventh Feet as the Maritime Counter - Special Operations Force Commander (MCSOF), Strike Force ASW Commander (SFASWC) and Deputy Ballistic Missile Defense Commander (BMDC).

San Diego to Norfolk via the tip of South America to participate in

"Southern Seas 2015" and via Norfolk, Virginia, head to Newport News, Virginia, to undergo its mid-life refueling complex overhaul (RCOH), while conducting Blue Sky, a historic name given to exercises conducted between the FACh and U.S. aviation forces. The exercise is designed to improve relations between Chile and the U.S. through cooperative airborne tactical engagements. During BS V, CVW 2 will conduct bi-lateral exercises with the FACh over land and off the coast of Chile. "Blue Sky V provides valuable Dissimilar Air Combat Training [DACT] to Naval aviators," said Cmdr. Wells Green, CVW 2's operations officer. UNITAS 2015, the U.S. Navy's longest running annual multinational maritime exercise, is part of the Southern Seas deployment planned by U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command/U.S. 4th Fleet. This 56th iteration of UNITAS is conducted in two phases: UNITAS Pacific, hosted by Chile, Oct. 13-24 and UNITAS Atlantic, hosted by Brazil, scheduled for November. UNITAS is a sea exercise and in-port training involving countries in North, South and Central America, conducted by the U.S. since 1959. The PhotoEx is a multinational coordinated event that allows each country to come together and act as one unit off the coast of Valparaiso, Chile. Of the 11 ships involved in the PhotoEx, four were U.S., one Colombian, one Mexican and five Chilean. They worked in close proximity, with distances between each ship ranging from 500 to 1,000 yards when in place. Washington stood at the center as the guide for the formation.

 

Ports of call included: Lima, Peru Valparaiso, Chile Valparaiso, Chile Punta Arenas, Chile Guanabara Bay and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

 

Participants from the GWCSG include the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) with embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2, The "Bounty Hunters" of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 2, the "Blue Blasters" of VFA 34, the "Kestrels" of VFA 137, the "Golden Dragons" of VFA 19, the "Gauntlets" of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 136, the "Black Eagles" of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 113, the "Blue Hawks" of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 78, the "Black Knights" of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 4 and the "Providers" of Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VRC) 30.

Task Force 70 is the Battle Force for U.S. 7th Fleet Commander, Task Force 70 (CTF 70) has operational control of all carrier strike groups and independently deployed cruisers, destroyers and frigates that deploy or transit through the 7th Fleet area of operations.

 

Commanded by Rear Admiral Charles Williams, the Ronald Regan is the flagship of George Washington Carrier Strike Group, Task Force 70 and Carrier Strike Group Five (formerly CarGru 5), with more than 5,000 Sailors, with Strike Warfare Commander; staffs of Battle Force 7th Fleet/CSG 5; Carrier Air Wing Five (CVW 5) and its nine squadrons and Destroyer Squadron 15 embarked. CSG 5 includes Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruisers and Destroyer Squadron Fifteen (CDS 15), which serves as the Sea Combat Commander and is responsible for Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruisers and assigned Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers.

 

Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruisers USS Antietam (CG-54) and USS Cowpens (CG-63); and Arleigh-burke class guided-missile destroyers USS Lassen (DDG-82), USS McCampbell (DDG-85) and USS Mustin (DDG-89).

 

USS Ronald Regan (CVN-76) and surface combatant ships operate out of Yokosuka, Japan, while CVW 5 operates out of Atsugi, Japan, when not embarked on Ronald Regan. Together, these units form the U.S. Navy's only continuously forward deployed (and largest) carrier strike group.

 

The CSG 5 Commander also serves as Battle Force Seventh Fleet and Commander, Task Force (CTF 70) for 7th Fleet. In these responsibilities, CSG 5 serves as the Commander of all surface forces (carrier strike groups, independently deploying cruisers, destroyers and frigates) in the 7th Fleet area of responsibility. CTF 70 also serves as the Theater Surface Warfare Commander (TSUWC) and Theater Integrated Air Missile Defense Commander (TIAMDC) for Seventh Fleet.

 

Carrier Strike Group 5, also known as CSG 5 or CARSTRKGRU 5, is the U.S. Navy carrier strike group assigned to the United States Pacific Fleet and permanently forward deployed to the U.S. 7th Fleet.

 

CSG 5 is responsible for unit-level training, integrated training, and material readiness for the group’s ships and aviation squadrons. As the only continuously forward deployed carrier strike group, the CSG-5 staff does not stand down when the strike group is in Yokosuka, but instead continues to maintain command responsibilities over deploying Carrier Strike Groups and independently deployed cruisers, destroyers, and frigates that operate in the Seventh Fleet operating area. The commander and staff are also responsible for the higher level Task Force 70 duties throughout the year in addition to the CSG-5 duties. The composition of the strike group in immediate proximity of the Ronald Reagan varies throughout the year.

5th Maritime Security Operations (MSO), supporting operations that are focused on reassuring regional partners of the United States' commitment to security, which promotes stability and global prosperity and Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR) is the U.S. military operation name for the military intervention against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), including both the campaign in Iraq and the campaign in Syria. Effective 22 Sep 2015, III Corps is responsible for Combined Joint Task Force- Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR).

 

The president has authorized U.S. Central Command to work with partner nations to conduct targeted airstrikes of Iraq and Syria as part of the comprehensive strategy to degrade and defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIL.

 

As of 3:59 p.m. EST Feb. 23, the U.S. and coalition have conducted a total of 10,545 strikes (7,061 Iraq / 3,484 Syria).

 

U.S. has conducted 8,076 strikes in Iraq and Syria (4,809 Iraq / 3,267 Syria)

Rest of Coalition has conducted 2,469 strikes in Iraq and Syria (2,252 Iraq /217 Syria)

Rear Adm. Bret C. Batchelder, commander, Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 8, visited guided-missile destroyer USS Bulkeley (DDG-84) to meet and speak with the crew, Jan. 21.

 

Truman can travel in excess of 30 knots, and has a crew of approximately 3,000. With the embarked air wing and staffs, the number rises to about 5,000.
